When we think of barbecues, the thoughts of steak, burgers, hot dogs, and brisket typically come to mind. While these are all delicious options, there are tons of other foods that you wouldn’t normally think to throw on the grill. Check out these foods that you didn’t know you could barbecue:
1. Romaine Lettuce
Lettuce doesn’t always need to be summoned to boring, cold salads! Wash the lettuce bundles and pat dry. Drizzle each one with some olive oil and throw them on the grill. Cooking both side until slightly charred created a whole new take on lettuce that you may have never tried before.
Avocados are always great in salads or as a side dish, but they taste just as great on the grill. Avocados get a lovely smoky flavor, and the heat makes them even softer. To grill, cut one in half, remove the stone, and lay it flesh down on the grates. Finish it off with lemon juice and salt and pepper for added flavor.
Grilling bananas is super easy, and tastes even better! Slice the banana skin lengthways on one side and allow it to open up slightly. Place it on the barbecue, split side up, and allow it to cook for a few minutes until it’s soft enough to scoop out. You can also place the peeled banana right on the grates for more of a grill and char.
Barbecue and cheese are two words that just sound great together. Grab some halloumi cheese as it has a tougher texture and can withstand the heat. It’s as simple as throwing a few slices on the grill, and it’ll get a soft, squidgy texture.
Quesadillas are always a delicious sandwich-like treat, and they can be customized to fit everyone’s personal tastes. Simply add the filling to each tortilla and grill the quesadillas until both sides are golden brown. Add some olive oil or butter to the tortillas for a crispier, tastier outside.
Pineapples are a sweet, savory fruit when eaten raw, but grilling it adds a whole new flavor to this snack. Using the barbecue for pineapple allows the natural sweetness to become caramelized. Slice them as you see fit, sprinkle with a little brown sugar, and let it grill for a few minutes. You can even use a liquor glaze for the adults, or serve with chocolate dipping sauce for the kids!
